President Akufo-Addo has appointed Peter Antwi Boasiako as the deputy director general of the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (COTVET).

The appointment, which is in line with Section 48 (1) of the Education Regulatory Bodies Act 2020 (Act 1023) is for a period of four years.

The newly appointed deputy director general for the Commission is expected to bring his rich expertise to bear on its work to achieve the goals of the Akufo-Addo government for TVET education in Ghana as well as to keep the sector in good order.

The primary responsibility of the Commission is to regulate, promote and administer technical and vocational education and training to support innovation in Ghana.

The Commission has as its mission to co-ordinate and oversee a TVET system that produces a globally competitive workforce through quality-oriented and demand-driven learning that supports national development.

TVET education

Technical and vocational education and training plays an essential role in improving the well-being of young people and communities.

It increases productivity, empowers individuals to become self-reliant and stimulates entrepreneurship.

What makes TVET successful is the intensity of its focus on skills development: that is to say, using hands-on training.

This helps students and future jobseekers to acquire not only essential knowledge of the subject matter but also the required competences that one needs to meet the expectations of employers and economic stakeholders.

Presidential support

In his State of the Nation Address to Parliament before the end of his first term in office on 5 January 2021, President Akufo-Addo said that before he took office on the 7 January 2017, “it sounded recklessly optimistic, but Free SHS and Free TVET are now entrenched parts” of Ghana’s educational set-up.

“In a few years’ time, we can guarantee that the basic education for the work-force in our country would be at the secondary level.

“It is a transformational step we have taken, which should quicken the development all around and give us confidence in our future,” the president said.
