The residents of Atwima Asamang, a community based in the Atwima Mponua district of the Ashanti region have petitioned their member of parliament, Isaac Kwame Asiamah, Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Atta and their DCE, Isaac Marfo over their poor road networks as well as lack of good social amenities such as good school and clinic facilities.
They have threatened to boycott  general elections as a protest against what they describe as a ‘continuous neglect and marginalization of the town’ by successive governments.
They said in spite of the role and contribution of Atwima Asamang and its connected towns  towards the socio-economic and political development, the towns had been abandoned and was in a state of decline with respect to development projects. They contend that both the NPP and the NDC have taken them for granted considering the massive support they have given to these parties over the years.
Atwima Asamang and its connected towns are a contribute of the region’s agricultural produce known for growing cash crops such as Cocoa, Timber among others which adds to the economy of the nation yet the communities seem to have a major challenge on their roads affecting other avenues such as health and education.
Speaking to a concerned citizen, who is also a blogger and Broadcaster Journalist , Adwenpa-Hene Kofi Mensah , said the town had been abandoned for far too long, therefore, they would do anything possible to seek its development.
For decades, successive governments have failed to construct the road network to make life for the people of Kwankyabo, Atwima Asamang, Abaasua, Gogoikrom, and Twindaaso, a bit comfortable despite huge quantities of commodities like cocoa, timber, teak and other foodstuffs derived from these places.
He stated that this has denied the poor farmers access to market centers which have the potential of worsening household incomes from farm produce and contribute to the widening the poverty gap.
Mr. Adwenpa added that , their road network has become so deplorable that passengers would have to get off the vehicle and walk a distance before getting onboard the same vehicle their final destinations.
He also recounted “We’ve had so many pregnant women giving birth in the middle of the road while being transported from the village to a hospital in Toase because of the poor road network. We’ve voted for NPP both presidential and parliamentary candidates ever since this constituency was created but none of them have helped us. We want our road to be fixed else we aren’t going to vote”.

Adwenpa-Hene described the road network in Abaasua Electoral area as the poorest in the Atwima Mponua as well as Ashanti Region.

In fact roads in the area are not only unmotorable but they are also deathtraps. Drivers who ply roads in the area often complained of their vehicles breaking down on the road due to its bad nature.

Another issue of concern is of the deplorable state of the community’s school which has been left to rot. Children are unable to learn under the almost collapsing roof as it’s maintenance has been overlooked giving them no option than to stop schooling.
Worst of it all is the case of an erected hospital block fully built and completed yet abandoned to it’s fate with weeds invading it’s compound without any operations ongoing in the facility.
Moreover, he [Adwenpa-Hene] expressed disappointment about a hospital project at Atwima Asamang.

In line with this, he said they will organized  a demonstrated  to register their displeasure and appealed to the government to ensure that the hospital project which began in 2015 and abandoned for almost 6 years, is completed, so as to serve the health care need of the people of Atwima Asamang and surrounding areas. “Health delivery is one of the paramount things that a Community must have”.

According to him the entire Community is unhappy the project stalled.  we have made several attempts through our MP and DCE for its completion but to no avail.

The Chiefs and farmers as well as people in the district have for far too long complained to successive governments and development partners about the total neglect of the deplorable and almost non-existent farm access road network in the farming towns as well as the abandoned school and clinic blocks yet to no avail and are currently appealing to the current administration of government to look into their plight.
“We feel we are not part of Ghana. Just look around, the evidence of total neglect is everywhere. We aren’t going to vote until our needs are addressed”.

He, therefore, urged the newly elected District Chief Executive of the area  Hon. Isaac Kofi Marfo as well as their MP, Isaac Kwame Asiama to adopt a positive and proactive approach in addressing the pertinent developmental challenges confronting the people in the area.

Mr. Adwenpa-Hene had also urged the chiefs of the towns within Abesua electoral areas to co-exist and work in unity to preserve the name and image of the town.

They urged distinguished personalities who hailed from the town to be concerned and contribute to the development of the area.
