It will be a World Cup like no other. Qatar, whose hosting of the tournament is controversial for the reasons described in this article, will stage the first World Cup to be held in the Arab world.
The tournament will also be the first World Cup not to be held in May, June, or July, instead taking place in November and December 2022, in a reduced time frame of just 28 days.
The tournament kicks off on Monday November 21 at the Al Bayt stadium in Al Khor with a match that will feature the host country, Qatar and .
The final will be played at the Lusail Stadium in Doha a week before Christmas on Sunday December 18.
There could be no more than two teams from Europe in any one pot, and no more than one nation from any other continental confederation.
After playing each team in their group, the top two teams advance to the knockout stage.
Defending champion France is among the favorites, vying to becoming the first team to repeat since Pele’s Brazil did in 1958 and 1962, but it will have to contend with a tough group.
Qatar was given a relatively simple draw and will open the competition against Ecuador lowest-ranked team in the world aside from the host nation.
