High Court Places Injunction On Fomena NPP Elections

Spread the love

The Kumasi High Court has granted an application for injunction on the internal elections of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Fomena constituency to elect new officers.

The plaintiffs Benjamin Ofori and others are challenging the credibility of the polling station elections supervised by a committee led by former Bantama lawmaker, Henry Kwabena Kokofu.

Asaase News gathers that the party’s General Secretary, John Boadu has been served today (Thursday) at an undisclosed location in Accra.

One of the committee members has also acknowledged receipt of the court document.

This means that the party cannot hold any other elections in that constituency located in the Ashanti Region, the party’s stronghold – as it re-organises its base.

What happened in Fomena?

The NPP suspended elections in the Fomena constituency as it opened nominations to pick new officers at the grassroots.

Some aggrieved party members, however, staged a protest against the decision as they accused the rank-and-file of the party of circumventing the electoral process to favour followers of incumbent MP for the area, Andrew Amoako Asiamah.

Asiamah, who is currently the Second Deputy Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament broke ranks to contest as an independent candidate during the 2020 polls.

The protesters had warned they will resist attempts to impose the lawmaker on the constituency.
