After several weeks of being denied access to power, the residents of Somanya the capital of Yilo Krobo District, in the Eastern Region , who do not have box iron have resorted to the use of heated saucepans to iron their clothes.
In videos circulating on social media, what the residents do is that they put heated Charcoal in these saucepans and when they get heated, they use it for ironing.
This new technology has been adopted by especially students in the area.
Meanwhile, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) insists the people of Somanya will continue to live in darkness until they agree to take prepaid meters.
The Managing Director for ECG in an interview on Joy News indicated that taking the prepaid meters is non-negotiable.
He said the people of the area will have to pay for the power they use because that’s what will be used in generating power and will be used to support the activities of the ECG.
There has been an impasse between ECG and residents of Kroboland.
ECG staff have been attacked severally for installing prepaid meters. The people indicate that they don’t want to pay for the power they use.
In recent times, the Military’s Engineer Regiment is being used to install the meters in order to restore power to the area.
