The Chief Executive Officer of the Africa Centre for Security and Intelligence Studies (ACSIS), Paul Coonley Boateng has asked Ghanaians to erase the mindset that a coup d’état is not possible in Ghana.

This statement by the security expert in line with the recent Coup d’état in Burkina Faso.

Armed soldiers in Burkina Faso announced on state television the closure of borders and the dissolution of the constitution and the government

The soldiers wearing skeleton masks took over Burkina Faso’s state television late on Friday night to announce coup d’etat this year.

This is the country’s second coup d’etat this year, ousting President Paul-Henri Damiba, who himself came to power following a coup in January 2022.

A spokesman for the group said Captain Ibrahim Traore, a 34-year-old military official, is the new leader of the country.

He also announced the closure of borders, as well as the dissolution of the constitution and the government and urged people to go about their day in peace, and said the military had removed the junta leader on the basis that he had failed to fight and prevent jihadist attacks in the country.

“We have decided to take our responsibilities, driven by a single ideal: the restoration of security and integrity of our territory,” Capt. Kiswendsida Farouk Azaria Sorgho said in a statement on RBT television.

Commenting on the issue on Atinka FM’s AM Drive with host Kaakyire Ofori Ayim, Security Expert, Paul Boateng asked government to take cues from the ongoing incidents in Burkina Faso and not assume Ghana is “coup free”.

Paul Boateng asked persons who are of the view that there can never be a coup d’etat in Ghana to rethink.

“We need to be cautious of our security and not assume that there can never be a coup d’etat in Ghana.” I conducted research on it. “Per the findings, out of 10 Ghanaians, 8 are highly disappointed in Ghana, 4 have vowed not to vote, 2 want a military intervention, and 1 wants a third force,” Paul Boateng said.
