The Principal Seismologist at the Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA), Nicholas Opoku, has confirmed there was an earth tremor in the country’s capital on Monday, December 12.
Mr Opoku, however, said details on the natural occurrence is now being pieced together by the Authority.
Residents in Accra experienced at least one shake in the earth’s movement Monday as many took to social media to share their experiences.
Barely an hour after a couple of earth tremors hit some parts of the Greater Accra Region, some social media users have taken it to timelines to share their experience.
Trending at number two on Twitter, some tweethearts are still in shock while others sought to confirm if what they felt isn’t peculiar to them.
The foreshock occurred at 11:49 am. The main event occurred 11:53 am. The aftershock occurred at 11:58 am. The public is advised to keep calm and be alert for more updates.
Some residents of Kokomlemle, Kaneshie, Achimota, Adenta, Circle, Osu, Ablekuma Manhean, Accra, New Town, Legon, Dansoman, Kasoa, Haatso, Kwashiman, Teshie, Nungua, McCarthy Hill among others said they felt the earth movement.
The seismologist said at the moment information on any damage is yet to be obtained.
He, however, assured that all necessary steps are being taken to furnish residents with information about the earth tremor.
“So far, we are gathering all the necessary data hoping to analyze and know where the earthquake occurred,” he said.
“At the moment, we don’t have information on any damage.”
Nicholas Opoku said there are a few challenges with their satellite system but thorough analysis of the earth tremor on Monday is taking place.
“Recently, we were having a problem with our satellite equipment. . . .[It] is giving us a lot of headache.”
Meanwhile the Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA) is yet to officially comment on the incident.
People in places that recorded the tremor have already turned to social media to report their experiences.
