Nigerian National Busted For Attempting To Acquire Ghana Card By Fraud

A Nigerian national who attempted to acquire a Ghana Card using a forged Ghanaian birth certificate with the assistance of a Ghanaian national, has been arrested, arraigned and convicted on his own plea.

According to a report by the Police Investigation Unit of the National Identification Authority (NIA) dated 19 April 2023, the Nigerian national, Shedrach Solution Ehimare, was assisted by one Isaac Anum Korley to procure a fake birth certificate which then was used in the failed attempt to obtain a Ghana Card.

“Solution Ehimare, on 3 April 2023, in the company of one Isaac Anum Korley went to the National Identification Authority Registration Centre at the CAL Bank Head Office, Accra for the former to register for a Ghana Card.

“In the course, the National Identification Authority registration official, one Sarah Obeng, who attended to the applicant Shedrach Solution Ehimare doubted the authenticity of the Ghanaian Birth Certificate presented by the applicant and his nationality as well” the police report indicated.

The officer for the avoidance of doubt, referred the applicant to the Criminal Investigation Department/Unit (CID) of National Identification Authority at the Headquarters, Accra for further investigation and advice.

‘Investigation by the police disclosed that, applicant Shedrach Solution Ehimare is a Nigerian by birth and nationality. His biological parents Samuel Ehimare and Paulina Ehimare are both Nigerian from the Edo State of Nigeria where applicant was born and bred.

Further investigations also established that, Isaac Anum Korley who accompanied the applicant to the unit’s office aided him to acquire a forged Ghanaian birth.

The two suspects were immediately arrested by the unit after the above evidence gathered and the first was charged with possessing forged document contrary to section 166 of the criminal and other offences act 1960 (act 29).

He was further charged with Providing False Information To National Identification Registration Officials contrary to section 40 (1) (a) of the National Identity Registrar Act 2008 (Act 750) and Defrauding by False Pretence contrary to Section 131 as read Section 134 (1) of the Criminal and other offences Act 1960 (Act 29).

The second accused person, Isaac Anum Korley, was charged with Abetment of Crime to Wit Forgery of Document contrary to section 20 (1) and Section 158 of the Criminal and other Offences Act 1960 (Act 29) and Abetment of Crime to Wit Providing False Information to National Identification Authority Registration Officials contrary to Section 20 (1) of the Criminal Act 1960 (Act 29) and Section 40 (1)(a) of the National Identity Register Act 2008 (Act 750).

The accused persons were subsequently arraigned before the Kaneshie District Court presided over by Magistrate Ama Adomako -Kwakye on 6 April, 2023. They pleaded guilty to all the charges levelled against them and were each convicted on their own plea.

Shedrach Solution Ehimare was sentenced to a fine of hundred (100) penalty units on count one or in default serves ten (10) weeks in prison and one fifty (150) penalty units on count two and three or in default serves fifteen (15) weeks in prison.

Isaac Anum Korley on the other hand was convicted on his own plea to a fine of hundred (100) penalty units on his first count or in default serves ten (10) weeks in prison and one fifty (150) Penalty Units on his second count or in default serves fifteen (15) weeks in prison.
