The Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Sam George, is demanding the resignation of Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa.
According to him, utterances from top officials of both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) suggest that there were irregularities in the 2020 elections.
The call comes days after the final report of the EU Observer Mission, which recommended 18 areas of reforms in Ghana’s electoral process, was released.
Accusations of irregularities were also levelled against the EC Chair in the dismissed election petition of the NDC’s flagbearer for the 2020 polls, John Mahama.
Sam George justified his call on Breakfast Daily on Citi TV saying: “Jean Mensa must resign because the NDC claims she bloated figures. The NPP also claims she bloated figures.”
“The NPP agrees with the NDC that Jean Mensa bloated figures. Mac Manu [NPP’s Campaign Manager] said the figures Mahama got were bloated. Asiedu Nketia [NDC’s General Secretary] also said the figures Nana Akufo-Addo got were bloated.”
“So one person, one election you conducted, NDC says you bloated it for the NPP and NPP also says you bloated it for the NDC. Nobody can even say that you gave us the correct figure,” the MP added.
Also on Breakfast Daily, Collins Adomako Mensah, the Afigya Kwabre North MP said the EU observer mission’s report rather vindicated Mrs. Mensa.
The report noted that the 2020 elections were efficiently organised and its processes successfully met a range of international standards.
According to the Afigya Kwabre North lawmaker, the observer mission’s report is apt since it affirms earlier reports released by other organisations that also monitored the process in Ghana.
“Of course, our friends from the NDC side disagreed with those conclusions, but I’m happy the EU has reaffirmed our belief that the Jean Mensa-led administration conducted perhaps the most peaceful and orderly elections Ghana has ever seen since the Fourth Republic,” Mr. Mensah said.
