“We want to make it abundantly clear that the NDC Oforikrom Constituency will not be intimidated or bullied. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: CONDEMNATION OF THREATS AND INTIMIDATION BY N.P.P CONSTITUENCY CHAIRMAN
The Oforikrom Constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) condemns in the strongest terms the reprehensible actions and threats made by NPP Constituency Chairman, Anthony Amankwah against our Parliamentary Candidate, Ahmed Anwel Sadat, on Saturday, May 11, 2024.
During a critical voter registration process, Mr. Amankwah threatened Mr. Sadat with violence, openly stating his intention to mobilize NPP hoodlums to physically assault our candidate. This outrageous behavior is not only a direct assault on democracy but a flagrant violation of the law.
Mr. Sadat was steadfastly upholding the rule of law by preventing illegal activities, including the distribution of NPP-branded materials, inducements, and other unconstitutional practices at the registration center. Such actions contravene Article 33(1) of the Representation of the People Law, 1992, and are unequivocally illegal.
Moreover, Mr. Amankwah arrogantly asserted that the Municipal Office overseeing registration belongs to the NPP, and they will continue to disrupt and obstruct the registration process with impunity. These brazen statements were made in the presence of law enforcement officers, indicating a disregard for the rule of law and the safety of democratic processes.
We want to make it abundantly clear that the NDC Oforikrom Constituency will not be intimidated or bullied. We issue a stern warning to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Oforikrom: any attempt to subvert the electoral process or threaten our candidate will be met with unwavering resolve. We will match any aggression “boot for boot” to protect the interests and will of the people.
We call upon the relevant authorities, including the Electoral Commission and law enforcement agencies, to investigate these egregious actions and hold those responsible accountable under the law.
The NDC remains committed to upholding the principles of democracy and ensuring a free, fair, and transparent electoral process in Oforikrom Constituency. We urge all stakeholders to condemn violence and intimidation and work towards fostering a peaceful and inclusive democratic environment.
