Bawumia’s Kayayei Celebrate After Receiving Gh¢500 Monthly Support

Female head porters “Kayayie” in Madina and Ashaiman who enrolled in Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s skills training centre have received GH¢500 each as their monthly stipend as they begin their four-week free training course at the facility.

Dr Bawumia has constructed two hostels for the Kayayei in Accra, providing them with free boarding and food as they complete their four-week course. The porters will receive training in baking, soap making, makeup artistry, etc.

The multi-purpose facilities, located in Madina and Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region, fulfil Bawumia’s promise made in 2019. Each facility is equipped with 300 beds, training rooms, a pantry, a kitchen, and a clinic, among other things.

The training programme is expected to train 600 head porters each month as a way of equipping the young women with skills to improve their financial situation. The vice president has assured head porters in other regions that more such facilities would be built to help improve their livelihoods.

The Director of monitoring and evaluation at Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Sir Martin Ameyaw, confirmed the money’s disbursement and stated that Dr Bawumia and YEA CEO, Mr Kofi Agyapong, made a promise to provide the allowance to the kayayie, and they had fulfilled their commitment.

Sir Martin added that after carefully scrutinizing and verifying their Ghanaian identification cards and mobile money numbers, the funds were sent to them via mobile money.

According to the 600 Porters who received their funds today, Thursday, May 30, 2024, from the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) could not hold back their joy as they danced in celebration

Sir Martin says when it comes to Kayayie’s problems, Bawumia and the YEA head have shamed detractors with their outstanding efforts.

He feels that it is regrettable that certain political figures exploit propaganda to gain power and that Ghanaians find it hard to trust politicians in general.

He also voiced his concerns about the National Democratic Congress, the main opposition, accusing them of constantly misleading Ghanaians with propaganda.
