VOICE OF EAI
The Corruption And Illegal Mining Fight Has Failed, Accept Defeat And Try New Methods, Advice To The President – Educate African Institute (EAI)
“A leader who does not take advise is not a true leader”
We as a policy think tank are hereby advising H. E. Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo to accept defeat. That would let Ghanaians halt the singing of blame songs, on corruption and galamsay fight and invite suggestions for a better approach. This may encourage Ghanaians to come out with innovative solutions for the unending canker.
On the 22 of June, 2018
the president reiterated his pledge to unconstitutional application of the country’s laws on corruption to all citizens irrespective of their political leanings saying, that is the surest way of fighting the canker in Ghana. Few years ago, the president was sold as an incorruptible leader, one with zero tolerance for corruption but recent happenings qualifies this assertion as a tragicomedy.
Addressing the Ghanaian community in Belgium, on Tuesday, June 6, 2017, as part of his visit ahead of the conduct of the meetings of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals Advocates Group of Eminent Personalities, he vow to fight corruption and therefore, launched Operation Vanguard on 31 July 2017 in fulfillment of his promise with the aim of stopping illegal mining (galamsay).
With such high expectations, Ghanaian are waking up at the morn of another election(4 years) to much disappointment and we humbly advise the president to be bold and admit publicly that he has been defeated by corruption and galamsay.
Therefore, we at EAI strongly recommend the following approaches;
1. End impunity by ensuring that the Attorney General Department performs their duty diligently.
2. Close down permanently the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), for a committed Attorney General can do the work.
3. Reform public administration and finance management.
4. Promote transparency and access to information. The right to information law must be operationalized.
4. Empower citizens.
Strengthening citizens demand for anti-corruption and empowering them to hold government accountable is a sustainable approach that helps to build mutual trust between citizens and government.
5. Close international loopholes. Without access to the international loopholes like tax heavens, corrupt public officials would not be able to launder and hide the proceeds of looted state assets.
6. Regulate mining without partisan mindset. Understand the illegal mining activities and innovate appropriate measures to create employment.
7. Introduction of boundaries of all mining concessions is a sure way to regulate the sector and also reduce the dispute between the interested parties.
8. Empower the EPA to ensure that all parties involved in legal mining activities adhere to the limits of the concession.
9. Supervise terrific development in the mining areas. The people in those local communities must benefit directly from the royalties without discrimination.
etc.
Undoubtedly, the corruption and the galamsay fight has failed and the only option is to consider the above suggestions to overcome it. You told us to get involve in the nation building agenda as citizens but not spectators.
We are citizens of Ghana. Africa is born in us.
Signed
