The Ghana Police Service has firmly stated that suspects involved in the Democracy Hub demonstration case, including Oliver Barker-Vormawor, have not been denied medical care.

The police in a statement noted that two of the suspects, Fanny Otoo and Oliver Barker-Vormawor, received immediate medical attention at the Police Hospital in Accra after reporting with health concerns while in custody.

“Suspect Fanny Otoo, on Tuesday 24th September 2024, complained to the Police that he was indisposed, as the suspects in the case were being prepared for court. The Police sent him to the Police Hospital in Accra, where doctors at the hospital attended to him and later admitted him for further treatment,” portions of the release indicated.

Already, a group of lawyers has filed a petition against the Ghana Police Service at the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) for allegedly violating the rights of demonstrators at the recent StopGalamsey protest.

The Democracy Hub organised a three-day protest to press home their demands for government to swiftly end the illegal mining activities in the country.

According to the group, the menace was robbing Ghana of its natural resources and endangering the lives of future generations.

However, the protest witnessed several arrests forcing only two individuals to show up for the final day of the protest.

So far, some 39 people have been remanded into police and prison custody, with others yet to appear before the court, including one of the leaders of the group, Oliver Barker-Vormawor.

Similarly, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, another prominent figure in the Democracy Hub protest case, also reported feeling sick on the same night. He was subsequently transported to the Police Hospital, where medical personnel evaluated his condition and admitted him for further care,” the police added.

“The Police would like to inform the public that at no point in time have the Police denied these suspects any medical attention.”

This development comes amidst heightened attention surrounding the Democracy Hub protest and the subsequent legal proceedings, raising concerns about detainee rights and the conditions of custody.
