Ghana Sounds The Alarm On Rising Child Marriages

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MOGCSP) has raised concerns about the increasing number of child marriages in Ghana, with a particular focus on the rising percentage of young adolescents getting pregnant. Mrs. Hajia Saphia Tamimu, head of the Child Marriage Unit, emphasized the numerous problems associated with this trend, including the persistence of traditional marriages backed by elite professors

To combat child marriage, the MOGCSP established the Child Marriage Information Portal in 2021, which provides a comprehensive platform for data, statistics, research papers, and documents on child marriage in Ghana. The portal is categorized into:

Research Papers: Studies on child marriage, its causes, and effects
Statistics: Data on child marriage rates, demographics, and trends
Events: Conferences, workshops, and seminars on child marriage
Partner Agencies: Organizations working with the MOGCSP to eliminate child marriage

The ministry encourages individuals to report incidents of child marriage on the toll-free number 0800111222. By working together, the MOGCSP aims to eliminate child marriage in Ghana by 2030,

The fight against child marriage requires a collective effort, and the MOGCSP’s call to action is a crucial step towards eliminating this harmful practice in Ghana.
