The Director of Elections for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Evans Nimako, is demanding the arrest of the Member of Parliament-Elect for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson.
The NPP wrote a letter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs seeking an inquiry into the citizenship status of the MP-Elect.
The party alleges that he still holds dual citizenship for both Ghana and Canada; an allegation the National Democratic Congress has denied.
The NDC says Mr. Quayson renounced his Canadian citizenship in December 2019.
Speaking to Citi News, the NPP’s Evans Nimako said the MP-Elect must be arrested before he attempts to abscond.
“I am calling on the security agencies to arrest him because it is possible he will run out of the shores of Ghana.”
Mr. Nimako is making this call despite clarification from the NDC that Mr. Quayson renounced his Canadian citizenship in 2019 and no longer owes allegiance to that country.
The NDC had said the MP-elect is “a full citizen of Ghana who owes no allegiance whatsoever to any other country. He is a Ghanaian in law and in fact and qualifies to be a Member of Parliament according to the laws of Ghana.”
It said James Gyakye Quayson duly qualifies for his parliamentary seat since he renounced his citizenship of Canada long ago.
The country’s constitution frowns upon any instance of an elected Member of Parliament being a citizen of another country in addition to being a Ghanaian.
The NPP’s claim, if found to be true constitutes grounds for the said MP-elect to be removed.
