Safety campaigner, Kojo Aidoo-Appiah is calling on government to regulate the activities of rickety and non-passenger friendly vehicles to help reduce accidents on our roads.

In an interview with the press, Mr. Aidoo-Appiah noted that regulating rickety vehicles and removing them from the roads will help contribute to road safety in the country.
He noted that it is unfortunate however that this aspect of road safety has not received much attention, and the situation has left passengers to their faith.

The campaigner regretted that most of the road safety campaigns have centered on over speeding, bad roads, drunk driving, wrong over taking, among others. “But it is also important to turn attention to rickety vehicles plying the roads, and threatening the safety of passengers and other road users”, he added.

He noted that some of the vehicles are virtual scraps with exposed metals that often tear passengers’ clothes and/or injure them.
“Some also have spoilt doors which expose passengers to dangers such as falling off from the vehicles, worn out tires, poor headlights, and sometimes during rainfall, commuters get wet while on the vehicles because of holes that have developed on the roof”, he added.

The campaigner also noted that some of the commercial vehicles, have their seats so closely arranged that, there is no leg room for passengers, thus coursing injuries and discomfort whilst on board the vehicle.

He however regretted that it is unfortunate that drivers and their mates of such vehicles abuse passengers anytime they attempt to complain of the bad state of the vehicle.
He charged the Motor Traffic and Transport Division (MTTD) of the police, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and all relevant bodies to help check this trend to make travels on our roads safer and comfortable for all.
