The people of Adagya Watereso in the Amanse South District of the Ashanti region, have made a passionate appeal to the government through the District Assembly and their Member of Parliament to connect the community to the national electricity grid.
Adagya Watereso is one of the oldest communities in the Amanse South District . It’s a farming community with residents growing mainly cocoa and other cash crops.
Expressing their plight of no electricity to MyGhanaMedia.com, they said that, their biggest headache is that more than 60 years after the construction of the Akosombo Dam, they have never seen a electricity light before in the community.
A visit to the community recently by MyGhanaMedia’s Ashanti Regional Correspondent, Kwame Yeboah , revealed that the residents depend largely on candles and lanterns for night activities.
According to them, lack of electricity in the community is affecting the academic performance of children in the community, because after their house chores, it is already dark and if there is no torchlight or kerosene, the children are not able to do their homework or learn.
When asked if their petition has been sent to the Assembly, they said admitted of petitioning the Assembly but all pleas to the government and their MP to hear their cry has proved futile.
The residents lament students find it difficult to do homework and other educational activities in the house especially in the evenings
According to him, because there is no electricity here, people living here have to charge their phones and electrical gadgets at Obuasi, in order to stay in contact with the rest of the world.
They also decried the bad roads and lack of potable water in the area.
