Former National Union of Ghana Students president (NUGS), Yiadom Boakye Emmanuel, known as YB, has called on the government to re-employ the over 12,000 workers who were wrongfully laid off during the transition period following the change in administration.
He asserts that re-employing fired workers will be crucial to the government’s plans to carry out its pledged 24-hour economy policies.
Speaking on JoyNews’ program “The Probe” via Zoom, YB emphasized that this move would be a significant step towards achieving the government’s economic goals.
Minister’s Approach Questioned
The opposition New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Ashanti Regional Youth Organiser Hopeful, joined by host Carlos Calony and other youth representatives, questioned the approach of the Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment, Lawyer George Opare Addo.
According to YB, the Minister seems to have forgotten his role and is behaving as if he’s still on a campaign tour, making more promises instead of highlighting the government’s achievements in youth development and empowerment.
YB expressed disappointment in the Minister’s constant emphasis on the “Adwumawura” project without providing specific details on the number of beneficiaries, regional distribution, and gender impact.
He noted that this lack of transparency brings no hope to Ghanaians and raises concerns about the government’s commitment to its promises.
Unmet Commitments
YB criticized the government’s tendency to make new promises without fulfilling earlier commitments outlined in their manifesto. He pointed out that the constant cry for financial support makes these new promises seem insincere and lacking in truth. YB emphasized that Ghanaians are eager to know about the government’s achievements in its first 120 days in office, rather than being presented with additional promises.
Call To Action
YB reiterated his disappointment in the government’s decision to sack over 1,2000 public sector workers and challenged them to implement their 24-hour economy campaign promise.
He urged the government to take concrete steps towards achieving its economic goals, starting with the re-employment of the sacked workers.
Conclusion
YB’s call to action serves as a reminder to the government to prioritize transparency, accountability, and tangible results in its efforts to develop and empower Ghana’s youth. By re-employing the sacked workers and providing specific details on its projects, the government can demonstrate its commitment to its promises and build trust with the Ghanaian people.
