The paramount Queen-Mother of the Akyem Kotoku Traditional Area and the Akyem Kotoku Traditional Council, Nana Akua Asantewaa III, has expressed her deep concern and anger over the unfair treatment of queen mothers in the traditional area.
According to her, some chiefs are unlawfully destooling queen mothers, which is against the Akyem Kotoku tradition.
Concerns
Addressing the press during a presser held at her residence in Akyem Oda in the Birim Central Municipality of the Eastern region, Nana Akua Asantewaa III emphasized that, according to tradition, she is the sole authority with the power to rebuke or destool any queen mother in the Akyem Kotoku traditional area.

She lamented that some chiefs are frustrating queen mothers by claiming to have destooled them without her approval.
This development, she noted, is not only untraditional but also undermines the authority and dignity of queen mothers in the area.
“The only person who has the sole power and authority to rebuke or destool any queen mother according to the Akyem Kotoku tradition is me ( the paramount queen mother), but it is disheartening to see certain chiefs going round frustrating some queen mothers claiming to have unlawfully destooled them”, she said.
Denial of Akyem Asene Queen Mother’s Destoolment
Nana Akua Asantewaa III explicitly addressed the notion that Nana Afia Kissiwaa I, the queen mother of the Akyem Asene, had been destooled, noting that it is not true, and pointed to a case study that vindicates her assertion that some chiefs in the traditional territory treat their queen-mothers unfairly.
She clarified that such an issue would have been brought before her as the paramount Queen Mother, and anyone hearing of such a pronouncement should treat it as a false rumor.
This clarification aims to put the record straight and reassure the public of Nana Afia Kissiwaa I’s legitimate status.
A Call for Unity & Support
The paramount Queen-Mother has assured all queen mothers in the Akyem Kotoku traditional area of her full support and has advised them to unite and withstand the unfair treatment from their chiefs.
She emphasized the importance of unity among queen mothers to maintain peace and stability in their communities.
Nana Akua Asantewaa III urged queen mothers to stand strong and not let these unlawful actions undermine their positions.
