COVID-19: Delta Variant Kills Three Children In Accra

Children between 22 months and 11 years are contracting the coronavirus in Ghana’s third wave of infection, health officials have said.

Speaking on Asaase Radio’s The Big Bulletin on Tuesday, Dr Frank Owusu-Sekyere, who is in charge of the Ghana Medical Association’s COVID -19 team for the Greater Accra Region, said three out of five children who were admitted at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital have died from the virus.

He said the Delta variant is the cause of the new trend in the nation’s capital, Accra.

“More of the COVID-19 cases are affecting children. That is not something we saw in the first and second waves. The third wave is visiting children a bit more and that is a bit worrying.

“At least we’ve seen about five or six cases and unfortunately we’ve lost about three of them to COVID-19. Occasionally, you will see one, but unfortunately we’re seeing a lot more,” he told the host Beatrice Adu.

Listen to Dr Owusu-Sekyere:

Dr Owusu-Sekyere is, however, commending the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, for taking steps to enforce the safety protocols, adding it is the best way to bring the spread of the virus under control.

COVID-19 update

At least 451 new coronavirus cases have been confirmed by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) pushing the country’s active cases to 6,922.

The death toll has hit 874 after six additional fatalities were recorded across the country, an update on the GHS COVID-19 dashboard reveals.

As at 8 August 2021, Ghana’s total confirmed cases stand at 108,677. Currently, health officials have recorded 100,875 recoveries.

According to the Ghana Health Service, the month of July recorded the highest number of COVID-19 cases among international arrivals since the airport opened on 1 September 2020.
