Mortuary Workers To Announce New Date For Their Planned Strike

The Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) has hinted at setting a new date to embark on its planned strike to demand better conditions of service.

According to the General Secretary of MOWAG, Richard Kofi Jordan, the strike, which was originally scheduled to begin today, October 10, will not take place. This follows a two-week ultimatum given to the government to address their concerns, which expired on Wednesday, October 9.

The strike was intended to advocate for improved working conditions, including the provision of adequate personal protective equipment (PPE), the resolution of salary arrears, and financial clearance for the hiring of 500 new mortuary workers.

Speaking in an interview with Citi News, Richard Kofi Jordan accused the government of showing little commitment to resolving their concerns.

“Data collection is taking place in terms of who benefits what and who does not benefit what. Personally, I think that it is a way to buy time. We are not going to listen to this data matter.

“We will strike again very soon. I think within this month, you will see us strike again. We want to be very strategic. The timing for us isn’t good. We want our strike to bite so hard to let the government appreciate that we are so important in this country. I think the government is not being faithful to us or has not been very active in solving our problems.”
