Barely 15 days to the close of picking of nominations forms for the New Patriotic Party’s Presidential primaries, other key aspirants are in a state of dilemma as to how how to have access to the forms.
The ruling New Patriotic Party will organize its presidential primaries to elect the flag bearer for the 2024 general elections which is scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 4, 2023.
It opened nominations on Friday, May 26, 2023, and will close the process on Saturday, June 24, 2023.
Sequel to this, reliable information reaching MyGhanaMedia.com indicates that some of the aspirants could not have access to the nomination forms.
A reliable source has revealed that one of the aspirants, Mr. Eric Sakyi Nketiah, a senior lecturer at the Department of History Education of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has been prevented from having access to the nomination forms.
According to our source, the NPP’s elections committee have boldly refused to give the nomination forms to Mr. Eric Sakyi Nketiah (ENS) and his Campaign team on Thursday, Jun 8, 2023 after two failed attempts to pick up the forms at the party’s headquarters at Asylum Down in Accra.
On Tuesday 6th June, 2023, Mr Eric Sakyi Nketiah and his Campaign team visited the NPP’s party head office to pick the forms but were turned down and were therefore asked to present a hard copy of his party membership documents to prove that he is indeed a member of the party.
Unfortunately, the aspirant was not having the hardcopy document but rather soft version. He was accordingly authorized to come along with the hard copy version the following day which was June 7th, 2023.
Upon the arrival of his team at the party’s Headquarters along with the hardcopy of the document required by the election committee to pick the nomination forms on behalf of the aspirant but were turned down by the election committee members.
Information available indicates that when the team arrived on the 7th, they were asked to come back for the forms on the 8th of June with an authorisation letter from the aspirant.
This was dually done in the afternoon of 8th June but staff at the party’s Headquarters refused giving them the nomination forms.
Sources also gathered that the ENS Team took a decision not to engage the media because they had been directed by elections committee to meet the Council of Elders of the Party on the matter.
Some supporters of the aspirant said they are gradually getting frustrated due to the treatment meted out to them.
So far, 10 people have picked their nomination forms to contest the NPP presidential primaries including Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia; a former Trade and Industry Minister, Alan Kyerematen; MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong; a former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie-Akoto; a former Minister of Energy, Boakye Agyarko; a former Minster for Railway Development, Joe Ghartey; a former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong; former MP for Mampong, Francis Addai Nimoh and former MP for Offinso North constituency, Kofi Konadu Apraku and Energy expert, Kwadwo Nsafoah Poku, Former Jubilee House Transport Officer, Odeneho Nana Oppong
