Sports Authority To Recruit 250 To Man Sporting Facilities

The National Sports Authority says it has succeeded in creating about 250 vacancies to recruit new staff to effectively man the new sporting facilities split across the country.

The Director General of the NSA Professor Peter Twumasi in an interview with Luv Sports revealed the decision to double the number of staff is due to the country’s poor maintenance culture which has resulted in the waning of most sporting facilities.

The NSA has in recent times embarked on series of renovation works on a number of sports stadia across the country including the Accra sports stadium, Essipong stadium in Takoradi and the Baba Yara sports stadium in Kumasi.

Renovation works on the Tamale stadium which is part of the four stadia constructed for the hosting of CAN 2008 is scheduled to start soon.

Unfortunately until the current political administration took over power four years ago, none of these facilities had seen any maintenance or renovation works.

According to Professor Twumasi the latest plan is to make sure there is provision of a maintenance manual for all the facilities to keep it in good shape at all times.

“Now we’ve taken it upon ourselves that every new stadium that will be constructed during the handing over, a maintenance manual will also be produced. As we speak the contractors are generating all the manuals with inputs from the National Sports Authority and the Sports Ministry”.

Professor Twumasi believes this is the best approach to halt the poor maintenance culture that has bedevilled our society lately.

“Once you have these manuals it tells you what to do each day, every month, year etc and that will also feed into our budget. You know we have also succeeded in creating about 250 vacancies to recruit new staff to be able to man these new facilities that we are bringing and the old ones that have been renovated. The vacancies include pitch managers, coaches, special administrators, and so forth to make sure that our work force will be doubled to bring effectiveness in managing these facilities.”

Meanwhile the National Sports Authority is confident football activities will resume at the Baba Yara stadium next month with renovation works nearing completion.
