The MP for Suhum, Kwadwo Asante, has denied that his driver was involved in the scuffle that ensued between some supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at a funeral over the weekend.
At least two persons sustained injuries in the melee.
“I wish to state categorically that my personal driver was not involved in the case, neither was any cutlass nor implement picked from my car as being alleged in the media,” the MP said in a statement.
Asante has, however, condemned the act and also pledged his commitment in resolving the matter.
“My sympathies are with anyone who may have been adversely affected by the incident and I wish the injured a speedy recovery.
“As a legislator and a law-abiding citizen, I entreat my constituents to exercise restraint as the police investigate the matter and I pledge to cooperate and support in any way possible to resolve the situation peacefully,” the MP added.
Condemnation
Alan Kyerematen, the Minister of Trade and Industry has condemned the violence that ensued among some supporters of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) at a funeral over the weekend.
In a statement, Kyerematen called for a speedy resolution of differences between the two feuding sides to restore peace and discipline in the party.
“Rumors currently circulating on social media that the clash was between my supporters and those of our Vice President are not only completely false, but mischievous and have been contrived to bring both the Vice President and my good self into public ridicule. I condemn without reservation this barbaric act of some members of our great party,” the statement said.
It added: “I believe strongly that any disagreement whether relating to a contest for position or differences in ideas and opinions should not be manifested in such violence in a party such as ours. The ideals of our party and tradition call for peaceful and harmonious coexistence and our motto, (Development in Freedom), has no place for violence.
“I therefore urge the Suhum Constituency Executives, the Eastern Regional Executives as well as the National Executives of the party to take immediate steps to resolve the differences between the two feuding sides to restore peace and discipline in the party.”
