The Deadly Overtaking Involving A Hyundai Accent And VIP Bus At Juaso That Claimed 2 Lives

Video footage captured on a Closed-Circuit Television detailing moments before a driver of a Hyundai Accent which attempted to overtake two vehicles ahead of him wrongfully has emerged.

The video vividly captured how the driver behind the steering wheel of that saloon car with registration GW 329-20 decided to overtake two vehicles of his in a hilly area with road sign signalling no overtaking.

The driver of the Hyundai Accent car is seen overtaking a Sprinter bus and an articulated truck ahead of him at exactly 7:10 a.m.

One wonders how the saloon car driver decided to take that risk, putting his life and that of his passenger in danger.

In the video recording, which lasted for about 25 seconds, both vehicles appear to be travelling at a top speed on the Kumasi-Accra Highway on that busy Saturday.

The impact of the collision was so great that the KIA Grandbird bus with registration ER 6000-11, travelling from Kumasi-Accra direction with passengers on board driven by one Amoto Kwabena, fell on its side as it was dragged on the road for a few seconds.

Some workers of a filling station located near the scene who appeared to be in shock are seen crying moments after the VIP bus fell on its side.

The mangled Hyundai Saloon car

The driver of the Hyundai Accent, identified as Frederick Oduro, 38, and Emmanuel Kwadwo Oppong, 46, who was on board, both died on the spot whilst some passengers on board the bus also sustained some injuries.

Saturday’s accident is the second fatal one to be recorded a  week after a police dispatch rider leading a convoy of civilian, police-military personnel from parliament was crushed to death in the area.

The spot where this accident occurred and the one that claimed the life of Chief Inspector Abednego Kerchire Koffie, who was en route to Wa, is about two and a half kilometres apart.

Police say a passenger on the bus, one Minkarb Adoma Peace, aged 25, was referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for intensive treatment after she and other passengers were rushed to the Juaso Government Hospital.

Ashanti Regional Commander of the Motor, Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Emmanuel Adu Boahene, blames the accident on indiscipline and reckless driving.

Some 357 persons were killed in the Ashanti Region between January and July, comprising 291 males and 66 females.

The figure represents an increase of 32 per cent from 223 deaths recorded in the same period in 2020.

Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased persons have been deposited at the Stewards Mortuary at Yakwei for preservation and autopsy.
