Some continuing students of the University of Ghana resident in the Commonwealth Hall have secured an interlocutory injunction against Management of the University of Ghana restraining it from implementing its residential policy of denying continuing students tenancy at the hall.

The according to the order of interlocutory injunction given by the Commercial Division of the High Court of Justice on January 6, 2023, the University of Ghana Management has been ordered to revert to the status quo that allowed continuing residents to continue to be resident in hall for a period of ten days, the lifespan of the order of injunction.

“…it is hereby ordered that the Defendant [ the University of Ghana] herein is hereby restrained either by itself or its officers, assigns, privies, agents, workmen or anybody working under the Defendant’s instructions from going ahead to implement the decision of the Defendant, dated 26th October 2022 in respect of the residential policy decision affecting continuing students of Commonwealth Hall, University of Ghana. The status quo must be maintained, as it used to be before the 26th October 2022 decision was taken…,the order of interlocutory injunction signed by Justice Francis Obiri reads in part.

The plaintiffs in the matter are Andrews Acquah, Abubakar Hamza, Adu Kennedy, Lawrence Edinam Egleh, Ismail Ali Sheriff, Solomon Appiah, Abdul-Yakini Lukman and Gideon Quansah; the University of Ghana is the Defendant.

Following repeated violence perpetrated by residents of Commonwealth Hall and Mensah Sarbah Hall, both on the University of Ghana Legon Campus, management took the decision to reassign all continuing students of both halls to other halls and in their stead have freshers. The decision, obviously, has not gone down well with residents and old students of the halls.
