‘You Have Managed To Keep The Lights On For 7yrs, Why Now?’ – Gabby Otchere-Darko Asks Energy Sector Players

A stalwart of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, is looking for answers to the ongoing power supply challenges being experienced in certain parts of the country, otherwise known as dumsor.

He says he cannot fathom why the nation had a stable electricity supply even at the peak of the economic crisis two years ago and be experiencing outages now that a general election is looming.

He is asking players in the energy sector what could be causing the challenge.

A section of Ghanaians for some months now, have been enduring dumsor which has affected their businesses and normal lives.

Some business owners have complained about the amount of money they need to spend to fuel their machines to keep their businesses running.

A video that went viral on social media recently, showed that the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the Tema General Hospital experienced dumsor. The video had a voice narration suspected to be that of a nurse, indicating how the lives of the babies were at risk.

The hospital has since issued a statement to explain that power was quickly restored after the incident in 2 hours and no baby’s life was lost during that moment.

Although Ghanaians have demanded a load-shedding timetable in order to plan for their activities appropriately, the government insists there is no timetable since the outage is a temporary issue that is being resolved.

Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, during an NPP programme in Kumasi, told journalists Ghanaians demanding for a timetable should provide some themselves.

In a post made on Facebook on Thursday, March 28, 2024, Mr. Otchere-Darko said the fact that the power supply remained stable even at the peak of the economic crisis is an indication that the recent outage is a mystery.

“There is something mysteriously amiss somewhere. You have managed to keep the lights on for 7 years, even during the height of the economic crisis in 2022. Why now?” he quizzed.
