Delay In Going To IMF Will Make Negotiations Difficult For Ghana – Former Dep. Finance Minister

The Former Deputy Finance Minister, Casiel Ato Forson has welcomed the decision by the government to go to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for support.

He said he is glad over the decision.

“I am glad that finally, the NPP government has taken the decision to go to the IMF in a way that Ghana can get the programme obviously to implement, that will, in the long term, bring about the economic stability that we want.

 

“I have always said that Ghana first. First a Ghanaian, and second a politician. I want to reiterate the fact that this administration has unfortunately delayed too long, it has taken them too long to take a very simple decision and to work very hard to get the programme,”

 

The Ranking Member on the Finance Committee and also Member of Parliament for Ajumako Enyan Essiam, Hon. Casiel Ato Forson says the government’s decision not to seek an IMF bailout early enough will make its negotiations with the fund difficult.

 

Speaking in an interview monitored by MyGhanaMedia.com, Casiel Ato Forson said the government will be negotiating from a place of vulnerability since it allowed many things to run aground before seeking the help of the IMF.

 

He stressed that the challenge now is that the Akufo-Addo’s government ego for a very long time made it difficult for them to take the right decisions and here we have arrived at a point where it is going to be a very tough couple of months in the negotiations of this programme because we have arrived at a point where you just don’t have the capacity to negotiate at a point of strength.

 

The government has announced its decision to go to the IMF to seek a programme amidst dire challenges facing the economy.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

In March 2022, Ken Ofori-Atta announced that the government will not go to the IMF but rely on a domestic economic recovery plan.

However, being unable to meet its growth targets with the plan, the government is now going to the IMF for support.
