Ghana Nurse-Midwives Trainees Thank Gov’t For Allowance

The Ghana Nurse-Midwives Trainees Association (GNMTA) has expressed profound gratitude to the Government of Ghana for maintaining the Nursing and Midwifery Training Allowance in the recently released budget.

The association applauded the government’s allocation of GH₵480 million to sustain this vital support for trainees, describing it as a significant step towards enhancing healthcare delivery in the country.

In a press release signed by National President Adumbisa Pascal and General Secretary Blessing Ampofo, the GNMTA noted that the allowance plays a crucial role in alleviating the financial burden faced by trainees, thereby enabling them to focus on their education and practical training.

“We commend the government for prioritizing the needs of trainees within the Nursing and Midwifery professions. This allowance not only eases the financial constraints of students but also reflects the government’s understanding of the essential roles nurses and midwives play in the health sector,” the statement said.

However, while welcoming this critical support, the association raised serious concerns about the rising fees associated with Nursing and Midwifery training. GNMTA described the growing costs as a barrier for many qualified individuals, particularly those from financially challenged backgrounds, and urged the government to review these fees to make the profession accessible to all.

Additionally, GNMTA called for urgent action regarding the employment of nurses and midwives who completed training in 2021 and 2022 but remain unemployed despite having fulfilled their mandatory one-year national service. According to the association, integrating these trained professionals into the healthcare system is crucial to addressing Ghana’s growing health needs and ensuring the delivery of quality healthcare services.

“The successful integration of these professionals into the workforce is essential for enhancing healthcare delivery and addressing the growing health needs of our communities,” the association emphasized.

GNMTA reaffirmed its commitment to supporting policies that advance the interests of nurse and midwife trainees and called for ongoing collaboration with the government to strengthen the healthcare system.

“We believe that through collaboration and mutual understanding, we can work together to enhance the Nursing and Midwifery landscape in Ghana,
