Ahead of the rainy season, inhabitants of  Abuakwa Cannan and Abakomadi in the Atwima Nwabiagya Municipal Assembly of the Ashanti Region have renewed calls  on authorities  to fix a mental bridge that has become what they describe as a death trap.

The bridge which links Abuakwa Cannan  to adjoining communities, according to commuters was constructed just about two years ago, but currently serving as a death trap.

A worried resident lamented how the bridge has become a major problem to commuters. “It is very scary and affecting our business so the government should please intervene so we can also engage in our business,” he said.

Another resident added, “Now the bridge is destroyed, the only way one can cross with goods now is to offload them, cross the bridge and pack the goods back onto your truck. We are appealing to the Municipal Assembly  to come to our aid  and if they fail to fix our bridge we will  stop paying taxes  to the Assembly. “This is because we are not benefiting from the Municipal Assembly’s  cake”.

One of them said “When it rains heavily, school children around this area are not able to go to school. Even drivers and commuters are not able to use this stretch to their destinations. So we are appealing to the Government to come to our aid. With the current state of the bridge, we are really suffering. If the authorities fail to fix our bridge, it means that our votes have gone waste. It is really difficult for us, especially in the rainy season. We will demonstrate if the bridge is not constructed”.

we managed to do our best by constructing the bridge ourselves because the municipal Assembly has neglected us for so many years, another resident stressed. According him, the state of the bridge has become a threat not only to lives but properties in the area. “The bridge that separates Abuakwa Cannan from Abakomadi is now a very serious death trap.

They expressed frustration over the continual neglect of the area by the  Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon Micheal  Amoah Awuku , and successive governments.

They lamented that the bad nature of the roads had brought untold hardship on them and that many precious lives had been lost on the road as a result of road crashes.

Speaking to some of the residents, they hinted that the  accidents were due to the bad nature of the road. “The private car drivers, motorbikers, and commercial drivers who plough through our disastrous roads daily are always visiting the mechanic shops,”. The residents of the area were contemplating stopping politicians from undertaking political activities.

Moreover the residents said,  the Member of parliament for Atwima Nwabiagya South Constituency , Hon Emmanuel Agyei Anwhere and the Municipal Chief Executive , Micheal Amoah Awuku have ignored the numerous appeals the residents have been making. The drivers who use the road also revealed how they always have to visit mechanics every time they ply the road.

They described the bad nature of the roads as streams on dams especially during the rainy season which makes movement difficult. They, therefore, appealed to the roads authorities to come to their aid to end the death trap on their roads.

Meanwhile some of them (residents) were demanding for the dismissal of the MCE from office by the President for non-performance in the Municipality
