Attorney General Must Step Down Immediately, Says NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is demanding the immediate resignation of the Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame over his failure to prosecute government officials accused of engaging in illegal mining.

The NDC made this demand in a press briefing on Monday, October 16, 2023.

According to the party, “Mr. Dame does not befit the stature of the high office of Attorney-General and Minister of Justice for this country because he simply does not have the interest of the nation at heart.”

“The NDC hereby demands the immediate resignation of the Attorney-General for his dubious attempt to cover up serious crimes that have been perpetrated against the state by corrupt government and NPP officials who are destroying our water bodies and forests through illegal mining,” said National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi.

This call follows the Attorney General’s advice that former Environment Minister, Prof Frimpong Boateng’s allegations in his report on illegal mining activities in the country are empty and do not have evidence to prosecute the persons named in it.

The Attorney General therefore asked the police to discharge the persons mentioned in the report except those still under investigation.

Reacting to this, Mr Gyamfi noted that the “AG’s advice is nothing but a cover-up calculated to whitewash the incessant corruption and nation-wrecking conduct of officials of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government and the ruling NPP, who have been indicted by Prof. Frimpomg Boateng for engaging in ‘galamsey’”.

According to him, the advice from the AG is a big insult to the sensibilities of the nation therefore the general public should treat the same with utmost contempt it deserves.

He said this is the same way the “galamsey fraud scandal” by Ace investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas was covered-up and the perpetrators which allegedly included a Presidential Staffer were let off the hook.

He called on Ghanaians not to allow the government to get away with “this scandal”.

He alleged that the tactics of the AG appear that he “is following after the footsteps of his Boss, President Akufo-Addo who has become known as the “Clearing Agent of corruption”’.
