In a heartfelt plea, the Volta National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called upon the goodwill of Ghanaians to urgently assist their fellow citizens who have been severely affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage, a recent catastrophe triggered by the Volta River Authority (VRA).

The Volta Regional Chairman Hon. Mawutor Agbavitor mentioned that the spillage has inflicted widespread havoc upon numerous communities and households residing along the Lower Volta Basin, reshaping their lives in unimaginable ways. The most heavily affected areas include North Tongu, Central Tongu, South Tongu, Anlo, Keta, and Ketu South Municipalities. “Shockingly, over 40,000 people, including children, nursing mothers, youth, and the elderly, have been rendered homeless and desperate” Hon. Agbavitor said.

The spillage has left a trail of devastation never before seen in the region, with homes submerged, livelihoods destroyed, and economic activities disrupted by the resultant floods.

The situation has worsened daily basis as sanitation facilities, water sources, and healthcare access have been cut off, increasing the risk of outbreaks of diseases such as cholera and other waterborne diseases.

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and VRA have been unable to provide the necessary assistance and relief, leaving victims in dire straits.

With each passing day, the plight of these flood victims becomes more severe in an already challenging economic environment. The call for support is a plea to the humanity of Ghanaians to aid those who are suffering through no fault of their own, due to the VRA’s efforts to protect the Akosombo Hydroelectricity generation installation.

The Volta NDC is urgently reaching out to religious organizations, including the Catholic Relief Service (CRS) and the Islamic Society of Ghana, traditional religious leaders, civil society organizations, industry leaders, NGOs, the business community, and the media to utilize their platforms to mobilize resources for these unfortunate individuals.

The Volta NDC fervently encourages generous individuals, groups, and organizations to step forward and help restore hope and normalcy to their fellow Ghanaian citizens who have been tragically impacted by this disaster.
