Ghana EC Must Start Thinking Of Electronic Voting – NPP’s Joseph Archibald

Mr. Joseph Archibald, a prominent politician, entrepreneur, and a member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has recently emphasized the need for Ghana to embrace electronic voting (e-voting). This modern approach to elections could address many of the inefficiencies and challenges associated with traditional voting methods. Archibald’s call comes at a crucial time when the integrity and efficiency of electoral processes are under intense scrutiny globally.

Ghana’s electoral history has been marked by significant strides in enhancing the voting process, yet it remains largely manual. The introduction of biometric voter registration was a step forward, but the actual voting and counting processes still rely on paper ballots. These methods are time-consuming and prone to human error, which can undermine the credibility of election results. Adopting e-voting could streamline these processes, ensuring faster and more accurate results.

Advanced countries provide compelling examples of the benefits of e-voting. Estonia, for instance, has successfully used e-voting since 2005, allowing citizens to vote online securely and efficiently. Similarly, India and Brazil have implemented electronic voting machines, which have improved the management of their vast and diverse electorates. These examples demonstrate that e-voting can enhance electoral efficiency, transparency, and accessibility.

However, implementing e-voting in Ghana will not be without challenges. The country must invest in the necessary infrastructure, including reliable electricity and internet connectivity. Cybersecurity is another critical concern, requiring robust measures to protect the integrity of the voting system. Additionally, extensive voter education campaigns will be essential to build public trust in the new system and ensure a smooth transition.

In conclusion, Ghana stands at a pivotal moment in its electoral evolution. By heeding Joseph Archibald’s call to adopt electronic voting, the nation can modernize its electoral processes, drawing on successful examples from around the world. This shift could enhance the credibility, efficiency, and inclusivity of elections in Ghana, reinforcing the foundations of its democracy.
