Video: 3 Years On, I Am Still Waiting For Mahama To Congratulate Me For Winning The 2020 Election – Akufo-Addo

Three years after winning the 2020 elections, President Akufo-Addo said he is still waiting for his main contender, John Mahama, to congratulate him on his victory.

Mid-way into delivering a speech ahead of the Constitution Day, the President briefly paused and said, “On a lighter note, three years on, I am still waiting for my main opponent in the 2020 election to congratulate me on my victory.”

President Akufo-Addo’s comment might re-open old wounds for the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Mahama.

Days after the declaration of the 2020 election results, Mr Mahama dragged the Electoral Commission (EC) and President Akufo-Addo to court, challenging the validity of the December 7 election results.

He prayed the Supreme Court to nullify the declaration and to cause a re-run between himself and President Akufo-Addo.

Nonetheless, after hearing the case for three months, on March 4, 2021, a seven-member panel of Supreme Court Judges in a unanimous decision dismissed the election petition filed by the 2020 Presidential Candidate.

This according to the apex court is because the case before it had no merit.

Chief Justice Anin Yeboah said the petitioner did not satisfy all the five issues outlined by the court to determine the case.

2024 elections

President Akufo-Addo also urged all citizens and the relevant stakeholders to work together to ensure the upcoming 2024 elections are fair and transparent.

The president said the foundation of functional democracies around the world is grounded in viable elections, which must be the priority of all citizens as we approach the general elections in December.

Akufo-Addo, in an address to the nation on Friday on the 30th anniversary of the 4th Republic, called for greater and wider collaborations and urged that the rules and regulations governing the conduct of elections in the country be respected by all.

“Democracies are grounded on viable elections, and, this year, like we have done on eight (8) other preceding occasions, we will go to the polls to elect the President and my successor. No true democrat can disregard the importance of elections and the sanctity of the ballot.”

“It must, thus, be in our collective interest to ensure that the rules and regulations for the conduct of this year’s elections are fair and transparent and that we all develop respect for them, a respect that should not be a function of whether you win or lose.”

He added that the way to strengthen the country’s democracy and the peace and stability is for all the stakeholders to work together to ensure the consolidation of the Ghanaian democracy.

“All stakeholders, that is the Electoral Commission, the political parties and their leaders, the electorate, and citizenry, should work to assure the consolidation of Ghanaian democracy and help us maintain our pride of place on the continent as a model of democracy in Africa.

“At the end of it all, there should be no lingering doubt about the legitimacy of the election, and the winning candidates, on the conclusion of the process, should receive the unalloyed support of all. That is how we can strengthen our democracy and the peace and stability of our nation.”
Ghana’s democracy

He emphasised the importance of preserving and sustaining the nation’s democracy.

He asked all and sundry to play an active role in ensuring the longevity of the Fourth Republic.

The President expressed a widely shared sentiment among Ghanaians that the democratic form of government is the most preferable.

“By common consent, all well-meaning Ghanaians agree that the democratic form of government is the most preferable and we must do everything possible to guarantee the longevity of the Fourth Republic,” she said.

The President emphasised that the path of multi-party democracy has proven to be beneficial for Ghana.

He drew a favorable comparison to the period of authoritarian rule, suggesting that the democratic model has brought considerable advantages to the nation.

President Akufo-Addo’s message reflects a strong endorsement of democratic values and a call for unity among Ghanaians to safeguard and promote the sustainability of their democratic system.
