The Sefwi Wiawso municipal disease control officer of the Ghana Health Service Mr. Abraham Koyaara has revealed that HIV cases have increased in the Municipality amid the coronavirus pandemic.

He partly blamed the situation on the increasing number of raw sexual intercourse among the youth. He explained that, many of the youth claim to enjoy raw sexual intercourse than the use of condoms.

This he said, has resulted in a general increase in patronage of family planning services among the young ladies just so they could satisfy their partners with raw sexual intercourse but without getting pregnant.

“HIV/Aids is on the rise because the attention has been drawn to COVID-19 and most especially the patronage of family planning services has rather increased.  Due to high patronage of family planning hardly for both partners to protect themselves during sex and most ladies fear pregnancy than HIV/Aids.”

Speaking to Kwame Kuntor of Lord FM after the 2020 Annual Health review meeting, the Municipal disease control officer indicated also that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the campaign on HIV/Aids has reduced drastically.

Mr. Koyaara cautioned that fighting the Covid-19 pandemic at the expense of HIV/AIDS may lead to another health crisis after the coronavirus pandemic.
